Pardew – Squad Isn’t Big Enough
As Newcastle United face their seventh European tie of the season already tonight, Alan Pardew has blamed the impact of the Europa League on Newcastle’s league form, plus the fact the squad isn’t big enough to cope.
“It’s harder for us to win the Europa League than for one of the ‘Big Four’ to win the Champions League.
They have the finance to attack with two squads, whereas we’re attacking a competition with more games, a heavier schedule, a reduced squad.
You want to be in a competition which gives you a fighting chance in your own league and this format is difficult for Premier League teams.
All I heard during the summer was ‘Blimey, it is going to be tough for you next season.
I’d like to have knockout ties all the way through”.
I think fans would clearly prefer a straight knockout format but at least the group stage gives a bit more time for fans to plan ahead in terms of travelling to the away matches. That is of course if ticket details are released well in advance and the ticket allocation is a decent size.
As for the manager talking about not having a big enough squad, we never expected a dozen new signings but maybe he is paying the price for not fighting harder for the three or more extra signings that we were desperate for in the summer and most definitely are now.
