Alan Pardew talked in the summer about expecting goals from all areas of the team.
Last season the four top goalscorers were Ba, Cisse, Ben Arfa and Cabaye…
This season, the four players to score in the Premier League are Ba, Cisse, Ben Arfa and Cabaye…
The manager’s stated aim of bringing in a dominant goalscoring centre-back (Douglas) and an attacking full-back (Debuchy) wasn’t met with the cash from above to do the deals, so we were basically left with what we had.
The only frontline signing being Vurnon Anita whose five career league goals were almost certainly not going to add much to Newcastle’s firepower.
Our players have to look around at the likes of Cahill at Chelsea who already has five goals in all competitions this season, while what about the diminutive Patrice Evra who (as we well know) has scored two goals from headers, including the decisive one against Arsenal yesterday.
I’ve got no doubt that Steven Taylor is as good a defender as the average/half-decent lot who currently represent England but if he can score goals (as he has done to an extent in the past) then that extra will almost certainly get him noticed. Of course he has to get back into our team as well!
