Ashley In New Stadium Naming Rights Row
Having previously been linked with becoming a shareholder, it is now reported by the Mail that Newcastle’s owner could buy the naming rights to Glasgow Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium.
The deal would mean that Ibrox, opened in 1899, would take the place of St.James’ Park with the ‘catchy’ sponsor’s name.
The Charles Green led shareholders have been looking for a stadium sponsor since taking over last year.
Exactly how much it would bring in is another question, with the Wonga naming rights element at St.James’ Park allegedly valued at a couple of million a season at most.
Arsenal recently announced a £150m extension to their shirt sponsorship and stadium naming rights but no breakdown of the two elements was made public.
Exactly what value a stadium currently in the Scottish third division with minimal TV exposure has is anybody’s guess. However, if Mike Ashley does go ahead with it you can be sure he’ll make sure he’s getting value for money!
The only relief is that it isn’t St.James’ Park in the news this time.
