America Calling All Newcastle Fans

The latest issue of The Mag saw a debut from one of our fresh new signings from the USA.

Bob Schwoch is one third (along with Matt Feltz and Tom Ziemer) of the team who put together the excellent ‘I Wish I Was A Geordie’, which is an American blog dedicated to Newcastle United. The site provides NUFC fans in the U.S. a place to find and share information, analysis and commentary about the club. Of course, fans in England and elsewhere are also welcome.

Bob kicked off their new regular column in our magazine and here is a flavour of what he wrote;

‘To say we’re eager to visit Newcastle is an understatement. The hardest part of life in distant Toon Army outposts is lack of contact with the native NUFC fan culture, of which TV and Twitter can give us only tantalizing snippets. I was recently interviewed on BBC Radio 5 by drivetime host Aasmah Mir, who wanted to know why on earth we picked Newcastle and why we’d want to spend so much money and time travelling all the way to England for a football match, as we hope to do this coming spring.

It struck me as an odd combination of questions. Having chosen Newcastle on the basis of its fans, of course we want to be among them. What any of us wouldn’t give, after a big victory, to be out in Newcastle itself celebrating with the black-and-white-striped masses, rather than tweeting manically on our computer keyboards, or frequenting American nightspots trying to explain what our shirts mean and why we’re looking so happy.

The planning for our long-awaited first pilgrimage to Newcastle is underway. It isn’t simple. But if all works out, you might hear several awed American accents somewhere in the stands when Stoke City next visits St. James’ Park. “Americans must love the long ball,” joked Aasmah Mir’s co-host. Not really. Our path to Newcastle may have an extended trajectory, but it’s aimed at a higher goal’.
