Alan Pardew Up For The Challenge?

Following the defeat Alan Pardew was asked whether the current position was the biggest challenge he had faced so far at St.James’ Park.

“For sure – there’s no doubt about that, we’re really having to fight.

When we conceded the goal we showed a little bit of spirit but it was too little, too late.

They had a greater intensity than us in the game, we struggled to contain them at times, it was disappointing”.

While last season the manager undoubtedly seemed to get every last ounce out of pretty much every player in not just his first choice team, but his entire squad, this time around there are any number of players who are below par for whatever reason.

The likes of Papiss Cisse obviously springs straight to mind but apart from maybe Santon, Ben Arfa and Ba, nobody has reached anything near the levels of last season.

The most worrying thing on Sunday at Southampton was that the team as a whole was really struggling throughout the match, a sure sign that Alan Pardew really needs to get in amongst the players and have them at it from the first whistle at Stoke tonight.

That was how we won the match there last season, from the first seconds Newcastle gave them no space and pressurised them all over the pitch, sitting back and waiting for the inevitable isn’t an option.
