Alan Pardew Looking To Sign New Full-Back
One thing Alan Pardew has made clear though is that he wants a new full-back.
For the third home Premier League match in a row, the manager has hauled Danny Simpson off and moved the excellent Davide Santon over to the right.
As Newcastle have struggled in all three matches against clubs that they would have expected to dominate, Alan Pardew has had to move Santon over to help the vastly outnumbered Hatem Ben Arfa, in the quest for creativity and goals.
Just as the opposition let Mike Williamson have the ball at every opportunity, they also know they can double or treble up on Hatem because Simpson can’t cross the ball or run at the visiting defence.
How the manager must rue the fact that this summer he didn’t dig his heels in and make the Debuchy transfer happen.
For my money, Alan Pardew is sending out the clearest possible message to Mike Ashley that he is playing Danny Simpson but only because he has no alternative.
Simpson is a good honest trier but as the manager made clear in the summer, Newcastle had to add goals and assists from all parts of the team.
The club failed miserably in the summer on that front and we are all seeing the consequences of that now.
