23 Reasons This Season’s Been A Struggle
Newcastle United are experiencing a strange season so far, some outstanding moments of skill by the likes of Ba, Ben Arfa and Cabaye, but no match as yet where the team have taken the opposition apart.
I do think there was a lot more that could have been done to prepare for this season, such as better planned pre-season and the more obvious signing of extra players to bolster the squad.
However, nobody could have foreseen just how many injuries and suspensions would be thrown our way so early.
Putting it into perspective, last season in the league we used a total of 26 players all year, so far this time Alan Pardew has already used 23 different players in only ten matches.
Krul, Coloccini, Santon, (S) Taylor, R (Taylor), Williamson, Cabaye, Tiote, Simpson, Anita, Cisse, Ben Arfa, Perch, Jonas, Ba, Bigirimana, Marveaux, Shola, Sammy Ameobi, Obertan, Ferguson, Tavernier, Harper
If you include the cup competitions the total rises to 28 players, so while Alan Pardew would no doubt talk about it’s a squad game these days blah blah blah.
There is a reason why the players are called the ‘first eleven’, once you go below that then you are going to get diminishing returns, never mind the problems created by a lack of continuity.
