Premier League Push For Winter Break – What About Fans?

8 years ago

A subject that keeps cropping up is the Premier League having a winter break, only this time the Premier League appear ready to make a big push on it.

Their Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore, has hinted that FA Cup replays could be the thing to be sacrificed to help make space for a two week winter break.

Scudamore has said;

“Unless someone is prepared to give something up, it is pretty hard. We are not inclined to reduce the number of clubs in the Premier League. Nobody has asked the Football League to give up the League Cup.

As for the FA, they don’t want to give up replays in the FA Cup, so we all sit down and look at each other.

We wouldn’t have the temerity to alter the FA Cup…that will be up to the FA, but unless the FA decide they have different priorities, where the England team is more important than something else they own, then that might be for them to look at”.

They really are living in cloud cuckooland if they think a couple of weeks off at Christmas will somehow transform the England team into winners.

What this of course totally ignores is the fans, no surprise there.

Unlike on the continent, the festive period has always been a massive time of the season for matches. Pretty much everybody is off work, many people not even having a choice as their offices/factories knock off for a week or more and having to take holidays then.

You also have loads of people living away who look forward to getting back to Tyneside perhaps for their one visit a year and who are desperate to see as many matches as they can.

In no other line of business could the people running the show take such high-handed approach to their customers.

It is bad enough having these interminable two week international breaks like we are experiencing now but trapped in the house with your family at Christmas/New Year, with no escape route…sends a shiver down the spine.
