Fans Push Ameobi Claims

Thursday night saw a spirited performance to defeat Brugge and put Newcastle comfortably top of their Europa League group.

Once again Alan Pardew used a mixture of automatic first choice players, alongside younger/fringe players.

After the match we polled the fans and asked who was Newcastle’s top man; in fourth we had Davide Santon with 10% of the votes, then in ascending order – Shane Ferguson (16%), Gabriel Obertan (30%) and Sammy Ameobi (40%).

Interesting that supporters have chosen the younger/fringe players to fill the first three players, especially because when you take Santon into account, the other ten players who got onto the pitch only collected 4% of the votes between them!

Maybe in these matches people might be focussing more on players who are getting scarce opportunities but with Obertan scoring the winner and both Ferguson and Sammy Ameobi repeatedly willing to take their man on, they are going to catch the eye.

It could be interesting to see not only who makes Alan Pardew’s first eleven against West Brom but also who he sees fit to reward with a place on the bench, a progression that he has made clear he wants to see for the younger players he has highlighted as possible stars of the future.
