When the Sunday Telegraph first reported (on behalf of NUFC/Wonga to gauge public opinion?) on the potential of a deal, we ran the following poll on the website.

Would £8m a season, for Wonga sponsoring St.James’ Park and The Shirt, Be a Step Forward for NUFC?

A massive 91% of the thousands taking part gave it a resounding NO!!

However, when Tuesday’s announcement came around we asked in another poll:

Wonga Will Be On The Shirts and St.James’ Park Restored, Is This Positive News?

The results up to now are 68% of Newcastle fans answered yes, a massive turnaround in how they felt as fans, if not necessarily in terms of how they felt about the new sponsor.

My take is that fans made clear they didn’t want Wonga as a sponsor but when it became a reality they were relieved that by hook or by…crook, the name St.James’ Park had been restored whilst at the same time acknowledging there wasn’t anything they could do to stop any sponsorship deal going through.
