Blind Leading The Blind At St.James’ Park

The refereeing display on show at St James’ Park on Sunday was so awful it actually made my skin crawl.  I couldn’t sit still in the Leazes end on Sunday.  It just made me so flipping angry!!! Yes I know we deserved to be beaten, I don’t dispute that, but what does annoy me is how bad Howard ‘Red Devil’ Webb is.  It’s not like he was crap for NUFC, or the mancs, because he was crap for both sides.  The way he officiates means that the game doesn’t flow, it stutters along with far too many stoppages and breaks up any flow that the home team builds.

Granted playing away at any of the ‘big clubs’ you would be happy to see the play broken up because it should give the underdog a greater chance of getting a result but all Webb managed to do on Sunday, was seemingly be indecisive and in the process infuriate 95% of SJP.

Even before his World Cup shenanigans, Webb has always been one of those refs who seem to enjoy the limelight of the back page more than concentrating on reffing the game.

Two things from Sunday;

Firstly, the way he allows Manchester United players to talk to him so much, which will influence his decisions in some way.  It’s obvious to me that Fergie tells his players to get at him but Webb seemingly doesn’t do much about this, which is obvious in the way that he doesn’t tell them to go away or back off.

Secondly, the incidents which involved both Tiote and Van Persie. I understand if he hasn’t seen them in the heat of the moment and that’s fair enough but both incidents should have been recommended, after the game, to be investigated by the FA.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want Tiote banned but if we are to trust the system we have to take the rough with the smooth. The way the FA negated the fact that they wouldn’t investigate RVP on Cabaye by saying they wouldn’t investigate Tiote either. What sort of system is that?!

I just want better refereeing and a better disciplinary system, which will improve the standard of our beautiful game. Is it that much to ask?!

The FA needs to look into performances like that and take action but they only do so if some big name managers have a quiet word. Ref’s should be demoted for performances as judged by a panel of fans, ex-players and ex -efs…..and I don’t mean gob-on-a-stick smoggy Jeff Winter!!!

Don’t get me started with goal line technology…that was in by the way but so was the one we didn’t concede at Goodison.

Onwards, Upwards.
