The Player Who Put Ben Arfa In The Shade Against Villa

On Sunday I thought one player was outstandiing for Newcastle United, yes Ben Arfa’s goal was outstanding (if that does it justice) but his overall performance was hit and miss.

I think by the end of the season this player will be seen a some of United’s outstanding players but just for the moment I find it is only a handful of my mates, ones where I respect their opinion pretty much 99% of the time, who believe what they see with their eyes.

The player is of course Davide Santon.

He was given time to adapt last season but what a player. I thought that whilst many of those around him lost their heads some or all of the time, he hardly put a foot wrong and was coolness personified.

Funnily enough the last player this happened with was Jose Enrique, somebody who took a long time to convince the majority. Arriving at a club that was all over the place in Allardyce’s first season I thought Enrique looked good from day one, it was bottlers like Alan

Smith and Nicky Butt who didn”t have the courage to hang onto the ball and play football who let players like Jose down. The Spaniard would produce some clever football to work the ball out of a tricky position only for the likes of one of those clowns to pass it straight back to him and put him into trouble.

Santon’s defending had come on markedly and his surging runs forward are outstanding, plus just like Enrique he can retain possession in tight situations and work the ball up the pitch and initiate attacking play.

I like Simpson as a player, he is a real trier and don’t want to kick somebody when they are down (injured), but I think the club missed a massive opportunity with Debuchy as I believe it would have given Newcastle the best pair of full-backs in the country.

If you don’t already believe in Davide Santon now, I bet you’ll be drooling by the end of the season.
