Promotion and Newcastle United

8 years ago

I think a good gauge of where your club is at, comes from how you deal with the promoted clubs away from home.

Teams like Manchester United and whoever else is challenging at the top end, will generally go to the newly promoted teams, soak up twenty minutes of pressure and then deliver the killer blow.

So where are Newcastle United at, are we capable of swatting?

Last season we ended up with a win, a draw and a loss against Swansea, QPR and Norwich, a mixed bunch.

The results don’t really tell the full story in any of those;

Swansea controlled possession to a mad degree but had no killer punch, Cisse giving them the old one-two with brilliant finishes.

QPR – Newcastle were terrible and very lucky to come away with a point.

Norwich – Injuries to our three centre-backs meant an emergency Simpson/Perch pairing and the team as a whole gifted them the match and their four goals despite two spectacular Ba goals.

Whatever happens today, Reading look as though they are very likely to struggle and if we are to win on our travels against the promoted teams then this looks to be the best chance.

I’m guessing Southampton are on a similar level to Reading but I’ve seen too many nightmares at Southampton to ever travel with confidence!

While the Carroll, Nolan, Fat Sam factors mean our West Ham trip is bound to be ‘interesting’.

It has to be all out attack today and swat Reading early, this is an essential three points!
