Merseyside Thanks Newcastle Fans For Hillsborough Respect

Well done to Ben Owers & friend for their tribute, follow on Twitter @geordiebenno

There is always a ‘bit’ of needle in our matches with Everton but on Monday night that was all put to one side, at least until klck-off.

Whether you were actually inside Goodison or watching at home, you couldn’t help but be moved at the joint tribute to those who have suffered because of ‘Hillsborough’.

I thought Everton Football Club did a great job in how they handled the whole occasion and credit to them.

One Everton Fan, Shay Daly, was so impressed by what he saw from the travelling fans inside Goodison on Monday, that he was sufficiently moved to get in touch and say this;

As an Evertonian at Monday night’s match at Goodison, I was overwhelmed by the Newcastle fans’ response before the game while the tribute to the Hillsborough 96 was in progress.

I shouldn’t be surprised of course because you have always been so generous in the way you behave. I am sure that the relatives of those who died, who were present at the game, will have taken great comfort from your heartfelt applause.

Yes glory is important, winning cups is important, beating the opposition is important, but what occurred in the away end that night puts it all into perspective.

Thank you Newcastle fans.

The actual matches and dubious decisions by the officials can be divisive but this is a reminder that there are many more things that unite us as football fans.
