Jonas Gutierrez First Choice Left-Back?
While I was sat watching the transfer deadline day tick away, I realised that when it came to us bringing in a multi million pound star that it didn’t matter. Most fans tend to think our squad is a little threadbare but I think it’s great that we haven’t gone out and signed a few big name players.
Everyone has been going on about Debuchy, fair enough he is a French international but we’ve got James Tavernier coming through, he’s got enough about him to be as good as Kyle Walker, he just needs a chance.
It’s fair enough sending him on loan to League 1 but if we gave him a chance to gain experience of Europe, the Cups and the Premier League I believe he can be better than Danny Simpson. In central defence as long as the big two stay fit we’ll be fine but I don’t have any doubts about Perchino, Williamson or Good being steady replacements when needed.
I worry a bit about left back but Santon is ok although I don’t think he’s a natural left back. I don’t understand why we sent Dummett on loan, especially with Ryan Taylor getting injured, but even with a fully fit squad I’d play Gutierrez at left back.
In midfield I have no concerns, the first teamers are quality and will continue to be a key part of the team, as far as cover in midfield we’ve got Gosling, Abeid, Bigirimana and Vukic who all have immense potential to be star players. On the wings distribution is something that needs to be worked on, Obertan has blistering pace and is working with Steve Stone(who was an England international right winger) on his end product and if he can improve on that then fans will be shouting his name.
Marveaux will be a star as long as he can stay fully fit! I think a full season is beneficial for him. He does have Gutierrez ahead of him but as I’ve said, I’d be playing Gutierrez at left back anyway with Marveaux in front of him.
In fairness I was a little concerned about not seeing a third choice striker coming in but having seen Adam Campbell play I can see him becoming a major asset. People tend to compare him to Michael Owen, I’d personally say he’s a bit more like Peter Beardsley which ain’t a bad thing!
Also, if he can get regular games in the Development League and show he can score at that level, I also think that it wouldn’t be a bad thing to give JJ Hooper a chance, he burst onto the youth scene last season and if his development continues and they work hard with him he could be a quality striker.
