On the back of his new eight year contract, Alan Pardew has been taking about his plans both short and long-term and has stated that in the immediate future he sees another defender as his main priority.
“We will look for another defender in the next window without losing anybody. Trying to sign a player is very fluid, one minute you want to sign a player worth £3m and then the price is £7m. Why? You have to get your head around all of these things”.
Taking these words and adding them to Alan Pardew admitting after the defeat at Old Trafford that he’d rather not have played Williamson but that Newcastle were short in that position, I think it is a knocking bet that the manager wants to bring in a centre-back in January.
Coloccini’s injury looks like it could drag on and we needed a fourth centre-back regardless.
Derek Llambias admitted this week that they tried to buy Douglas from FC Twente in the summer (I think it is a toss up as to whether Alan Pardew was talking about Debuchy or Douglas, or both of them!) but couldn’t agree a price, in January the Brazilian/Dutch defender will only have six months left on his contract and the transfer fee could be a lot more to Llambias and Ashley’s liking.
