The Special One’s Link With Newcastle United

The ‘what could have been’ is always a strange place to visit, especially if you a Newcastle fan.

What if Newcastle had won that title under KK in 1996?

What if Damien Duff hadn’t diverted the ball into the Newcastle net to seal relegation?

What if United had beaten the mackems in the 1990 play-offs and gone up under Jim Smith?

What if Ruud Gullit hadn’t left out Shearer and Ferguson for the derby match which sparked his departure?

Alan Pardew revealed the following this week;

“I had a text from Jose Mourinho wishing me all the best and it’s things like that which make you realise things are good. I don’t usually get texts from him so it shows we’re getting noticed”.

Nice touch by Jose and led me to wonder about one of the biggest ‘What ifs’ of our modern history.

Sir Bobby’s eventual departure was of course so badly handled that you can’t imagine how it could have been made worse.

What if though, Sir Bobby had been encouraged to bring in his own replacement and work with him to continue the great job he’d done at Newcastle.

What if that person had been Joe Mourinho?

Sir Bobby knew him well from his days at Barcelona and ironically while our Knight was being unceremoniously shoved out of the door, Mourinho had just moved to Chelsea having brilliantly won the UEFA Cup and Champions League with Porto.

He obviously has gone on to further great achievements with the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid but to have achieved what he did with Porto, against the powerhouses of Europe, takes some beating.

What if Sir Bobby had put his arm around his shoulders and sold him his Newcastle United dream?
