Surprisingly, I Find Myself Trusting Pardew & Ashley
I know it’s been a bit quiet on the transfer front but this doesn’t tend to bother me. Surprisingly, I find myself trusting Pardew and Ashley more and more, I think that they put in outstanding work finding great players at good value. Having said that, we need to strengthen our defence, plus I would like to see us land Debuchy and another centre back. I don’t think another striker should be a priority, but we could possibly do with a third first team central midfielder.
Failure for us would be to not make any form of Europe next year, I really feel that if the club wants to keep growing it has to show the world it can be a regular feature in Europe. As for a success, making Europe again, having a decent cup run (Quarter Final at least) and making the knock out stages of Europe.
As for the Champions League place v winning a trophy debate, I believe in order to move forward as a club, we need to attract the type of players who want to be in the Champions League. Winning a cup might improve our domestic reputation but will do little if we want to attract stars in the foreign leagues. Winning a CL place will also give us increased bargaining power with our own stars, who should be less likely to want to leave for another club
I expect Newcastle to have another good season, with a 5th or 6th place finish, and a decent cup run. I’m impressed that we’ve managed to keep our key players (fingers crossed), and I expect our players such as Krul, Tiote and Cabaye to improve more during the season.
Coloccini is so important because he is such a rock at the back and Newcastle haven’t been able to find a centre back like him in the transfer market yet. Cabaye’s vision and passing have been the key to so many Newcastle goals last year and so for me, he just beats Tiote as the most important midfielder because of his attacking attributes.
I don’t worry any more about the others at the top stealing our stars, I don’t think the sides with the money to sign our elite players need them in that position. Manchester United have been looking for creative midfielders, Man City are after van Persie so they won’t want Ba or Cisse, Chelsea have already spent over £50m and probably couldn’t afford another £20m+ player.
