Pardew Cracks The Whip

9 years ago

Defeats happen in pre-season friendlies, they have in the past and will happen again in the future, but yesterday at Cardiff was a strange one.

Only a week before the start of the season, Newcastle’s last pre-season friendly sees us take to the pitch with the kind of weakened line-up I thought the manager might put out in the Europa qualifier! I suppose Wales is kind of another country….

I’m sure Alan Pardew was anything but relaxed that he didn’t have the likes of Ben Arfa, Cisse, Ba and Cabaye on the pitch and it appears the rest of the players weren’t too impressed either – the manager giving some interesting comments afterwards;

“Poor game from our point of view, the first half especially – our attitude wasn’t right. We didn’t bring some big names here and I think the attitude of the squad was we should have brought them. But they were injured and so the opportunity today has passed a few of our other players by”.

Behind the polished exterior I have little doubt that Alan Pardew has an iron fist, even if he does keep it hidden inside a velvet glove most of the time. It is the same with all successful managers and Sir Bobby was the same, I met the great man a few times and I can personally testify that he didn’t suffer fools.

The manager will have them out on the training pitch to sort it out this coming week but maybe some of our squad players needed reminding they have to play at their very best to earn a place in our team these days.

One thing for sure – if the team repeat their Welsh performance against Spurs then it could be the beginning of a long hard season.

Finally, two extra observations –

It does suggest how tight the squad is that nobody had a clue neither Ba or Cisse would be playing against Cardiff.

Secondly though, it doesn’t say much for the journalists covering Newcastle United that they didn’t have a Scooby Doo about it, even though Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba didn’t even travel to Cardiff!
