Newcastle United Facing Second Season Syndrome?

After a Summer of transfer rumours…speculation…good sources…I am sick to death of it.

It is a fine balance that Llambias is playing with. If we end up with one or no quality signing, our much lauded team spirit will be severely tested. Methinks problems will occur.

People need to try and separate our previous ‘Michael Owen’ signings (insert your own name) which none of us want, with paying a couple of extra million for a Debuchy who should markedly improve the team.

Expectations for the coming season?

I expect us to struggle to achieve what we achieved last season. My expectation would be 7/8th which is fine. Many will see this as disappointing and part of me says we are good enough to push on but 3 reasons in particular say we will not

More injuries/suspensions to key players

Second season syndrome, particularly for Ba and Cisse.

Lack of quality recruitment (yet).

What would equal success and failure in the new season?

A cup win is a success for me, clear and simple. Champions League qualification would be nice but I would take avoiding the drop and a cup win.

Trophy is everything except relegation. I hope that is not prophetic.

Three Most Important Newcastle players?

Cabaye dictates how we play so is critical, Tiote lifts the tempo and is excellent against the top teams, plus Krul saves us points as well as being more dominant in the box than we are used to and therefore makes defenders look better.

Starting Eleven?

Krul, Simpson, Santon, Colo and Saylor; Tiote, Cabaye, Jonas; Cisse, Ben Arfa, Ba. And there lies the rub – it is too easy to pick.

Do you still worry that we will lose one of our elite players before the window closes?

Of course – the right offer and any of them goes.
