Newcastle Need To Jump Bonus Hurdle To Land Debuchy

The latest hurdle put forward on the Mathieu Debuchy transfer saga is that as well as an £8m fee, Lille are insisting on possible bonuses such as sell-on fees and image rights.

This is obviously at odds with Mike Ashley’s much publicised transfer strategy of paying all transfer fees up front with nothing left hanging, either in terms of bonuses or part of the transfer fee deferred. This latest development has been reported by Ladbrokes.com today.

This very public transfer saga now simply comes down to money, as most of them do eventually.

The player clearly wants to leave, the two clubs are seemingly now in a position where they are happy to buy and sell (Lille now have replacement signed up) him.

This new sticking point would appear most definitely to relate back to the bargain capture of Yohan Cabaye for under £5m. The player now worth several times that and Lille undoubtedly feeling pretty hard done by, especially if Newcastle United ever cashed in on him.

To avoid the annoyance of bonuses/deferred payments, Mike Ashley may have to pay more up front to land the player – we wait with interest.
