The breaking news today is that Newcastle United have at last reached agreement with Ajax to buy Vurnon Anita, a vital cog in the Dutch club’s title success last season.

Sky Sports are reporting that the clubs have agreed a fee of just over £6m and the versatile left-back/midfielder is expected on Tyneside tomorrow for his medical

Recent days have shown how fragile the current squad is and a talented player who can play in a number of positions looks an ideal signing.

The signing would be a big relief to all Newcastle fans who have seen the close season drag on without any success in signing first-team ready players.

Hopefully this will be the first of a number of signings as there is little doubting the quality of Newcastle’s first eleven but after that a few injuries could cause serious problems.

Talented? You seen him play? He’s a water carrier! Awful signing! I’m watching him for about the 10th time now and never seen him affect a game.

Talented? He’s a waste of one of those nice new shirts! Seriously awful signing. Not as good as Brigiramana. Doesn’t offer anything to a game of football, most of which pass him by as he jogs about the pitch. I hope this is a smokescreen to scare Lille into selling Debuchy.

  • No offence folks, but I’d trust Graham Carr and co. rather than NUFC fans on this one.
Anita may take some time to get used to the Premier League, but he’s got good potential, and that’s why we are paying £6m or so for him.

Have faith, in Carr we Trust.

Dicka am guessing Graham Carr has watched him even more times than You, I think he’s earned the trust of the owner, manager and fans given his past record. As for the water carrier tag, Cantona said the same thing about Deschamps, it was the latter that picked up the World Cup though, the Brazilians used to say similar things about Dunga but Tostao I think it was, said that even Pele needed someone to carry the piano. Give the player a fair crack eh ?

What are his assets that have potential? When I look at Brigiramana, a similar player; I see him making tackles and interceptions in our defensive third of the pitch, I see him making clever little passes and making the odd break forward.
What is it that Anita will ‘potentially’ give us? I admit, I’ve only seen him play about 10 full games and I’m sitting watching him now. He hasn’t made a single tackle in defensive positions, has created nothing and for their 2nd goal, he was 40 yards from his own goal when they scored, as a defensive midfield player. That is typical of every game I have seen and actually in this one, he made one run forward and was played in one on one with the keeper well off his line and the ball bouncing nicely for him……. he fluffed it, totally bottled it.
Before we signed Tiote, if you watched him, you could see his qualities, Yohan Cabaye was no secret as the creative player in a side which won the French League title, although they have both exceeded expectations. I’d just like to know what Aanita’s qualities are because he hides them well.

Paul; if he pulls on a black and white shirt, I’ll be behind him 100% and hope I’m horribly wrong. I have to point out though, that we don’t get every signing right. Gabriel Obertan was an awful player at Man Utd and that was clear for all to see. I said it when we signed him, as did every Man Utd fan but NUFC fans said give him a chance, he has potential. He’s not a footballer and never will be, he’s one of our worst ever signings. I’d love to hear on here from someone who has watched Anita regularly and hear if they have anything positive to say.

Just watching him on YouTube, looks totally right footed like Santon?

Any views on Anita’s performance yesterday or am I going to get the usual; give him time? as I heard for the first half of last season with Obertan! I sincerely hope Tiote is not going and we are going to have to rely on Anita as our midfield lynchpin this season! Cabaye having to do far too much defensive work to cover for Anita and can’t influence the game further forward. We should have played the 18 year old Bigirimana to give us more steel than Anita offers, even if he is still unpolished and makes mistakes. The sad thing is that he was more involved yesterday than I have seen him be for Ajax.
