Following the signing of Vurnon Anita earlier today, the news from Holland is that another long-running Newcastle target could be also be on the agenda again.

Our man in Holland, Paul Benneworth, sent us this;

With the Douglas saga there was an interesting twist last night.

McLaren was saying he wants some cover at left back given the injury situation to Kuiper with Schilder providing (some) cover but Munsterman (FC Twente Chairman) says there is no money unless someone is sold before the end of the transfer period.

Douglas must be the number one candidate for a fire sale given that they have now got  three starting centre-backs, of them Wisgerhof is too old to really sell for serious money, while Bjaelland has just arrived.

The only other candidate is Chadli but seeing how he performed last night for Belgium (a bit Duff-esque, running hard but no end product) and was overshadowed completely when substituted by Dries Mertens, who PSV bought together with Kevin Strootman for €13m.

I’s hard to see Chadli bringing in more money than Douglas and selling the striker anyway would just give them problems up front.

Anyway, I reckon Douglas might be a step nearer if NUFC are still interested.

I still reckon douglas signed last month, once the cistizenship issue is reolved late next week he will then be free to work around europe without the need for a visa
it was well known we were after a full back and a centre back anita will replace santon at left back and we have not been linked with any other centre backs due to the douglas situation
personally id still like to see danny simpson stay and if he doesnt sign a new contract there wouldnt be much lost letting him go free at the end of the season and having him here this year would be worth it for the cover
i see everyone reckons we are going to suffer seccond season syndrome in our third year back ! seems some people are desperate for us to drop again.

Anita won’t be our regular left back, he has been sure to communicate that in his first interview. I get a feeling pardew wants to try a system with tiote and anita sitting deep, therefore giving cabaye, HBA, cisse and Ba freedom to do what they want. I reckon it could work but who knows, he has a lot of options.

Totally agree. Anita CAN provide cover at LB/RB, but they’re not his best position by a long stretch. He is a superb defensive midfield player, and a partnership in the middle with Tiote, allowing Cabaye to push up would be superb.

Anita is not a supurb player in any position. He’s overrated and will disappoint before being let off in the summer. You have wasted ur money and in Amsterdam they are still lol. ;)

Douglas ís a great defender tho so I hope he’ll be staying at Twente one more year. I don’t think Twente need to sell either him or Chadli (or anyone else for that matter) but they will let Douglas go for the right price as it is the last year on his contract. Douglas would do well at Newcastle so it would be a good move for him either this summer or next year.

          Just my 2 cents…

(did you know Tiote was on the bench at Twente under MCClaren? Crazy indeed)

Bb, “Anita will replace Santon at LB”
Oh dear, do you not read reports or listen to Anita himself or even look at Anita’s new number (8).
He has been bought for approx £6.5m as a holding midfielder who is also a technically gifted playmaker. He did NOT arrive on Tyneside to become the regular LB.
Amazes me how some people keep writing this ill informed stuff ?!
