Andy Carroll v Steven Taylor

The whole will he or won’t he debate over Andy Carroll possibly returning to Newcastle has seemingly missed one important factor, Steven Taylor.

It seems an awful long time ago but it only just over two years ago that Steven Taylor ended up with a broken jaw after a training ground incident allegedly involving Andy Carroll.

Even though this ‘incident’ led to Taylor missing months of vital matches, support for the absent defender was a bit thin on the ground amongst sections of our support and seemingly in the club hierarchy. Any disciplinary action wasn’t visible to the public, nor indeed broadcasted support for Taylor. The bottom line for many was that Carroll was the bigger asset which overrode everything else.

How ironic then that a couple of years on, probably those very same fans are the ones deriding Carroll now.

Even more irony on top of that, with Taylor now seen as an essential part of Newcastle’s team and his partnership with Coloccini potentially one of the best in the division.

I’d go further and suggest that if Taylor stays fit, he will be in the England squad before Christmas.

Back in 2010, I would guess there would have been a massive vote in favour of Carroll over Taylor, if we could have kept only one of them.

If Liverpool asked for Taylor in return for Carroll what would your reaction be now?

I know what mine would be.
