Save The Fusiliers!

What has this got to do with football? Well there has been a long history of close relations between the local community, Newcastle United and the Fusiliers. There have been many occasions when the club has recognised the heroism and devotion to duty of their local county regiment and many that have served and continue to serve in the Fusiliers are Newcastle United supporters.

It is only two Years ago that the Duchess of Northumberland was proud to play her part in welcoming home soldiers from Afghanistan, and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was also glad to say thank-you to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (2RRF), which had returned to the UK after a six-month tour of duty in Helmand Province. Shearer said: “It’s very satisfying that the parades are my first public duty as Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland.”Many of these soldiers are from this region so it’s great to be able to welcome them home from a very tough job.” Seven members of the regiment paid the ultimate sacrifice during that tour.

Having met some of these soldiers on that occasion I can tell you that meeting their hero Alan Shearer made their day. It is therefore my duty to make you aware of the Governments ill founded decision to disband the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in the forthcoming cuts to the army and, while we are all aware of the Governments’ policy of reducing budget deficits, bring to your attention the campaign to reverse this poor decision. After all these soldiers and their predecessors have fought for our democratic right to have our say, they have supported us often in the most terrible of circumstances it is now time to show them our support.

The campaign is challenging the data which the Government have used to manipulate the figures and is now being supported by Lord James Percy, Members of Parliament and local councils from all the recruiting areas of the Battalion (Warwickshire, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Northumberland), and various celebrities that have had family links to the regiment. Manchester United has also pledged their support – it is time for the supporters of Newcastle United to register their protest.
