Newcastle’s Pre-Season Twist Sees Change Of Opposition

Newcastle United’s pre-season ‘schedule’ took another twist as one of the only three officially confirmed friendlies has seen a change of opposition but not the venue.

The scheduled friendly against Porto which was part of the ‘Trofeu do Guadiana’ at the Algarve Stadium in Portugal on Saturday 28th July does not now go ahead, instead all details are the same but SC Braga provide the opposition. Braga finished third in Portugal’s top division last season and could mean our old mate Hugo Viana faces his old club.

This is now a summary of where we (believe we) are at with pre-season schedule now!

‘Confirmation’ now in from the host club that Newcastle will be playing a pre-season friendly in Holland at 5pm on Saturday 4th August.

Tim Krul’s old team, Den Haag, have announced they are hosting United and tickets are going on sale this Wednesday 11th July over in the Netherlands.

Whether tickets will be on sale at St.James’ Park for travelling fans is a good question, we are awaiting news from Newcastle United, same goes for the other friendlies already confirmed by United and those where information has only come from the opposition or ESPN TV schedules!

The three away friendlies confirmed by NUFC are;

Friday 27th July – Olympiakos (Algarve Stadium) 8.45pm

Saturday 28th July – (Now) SC Braga (Algarve Stadium) 8.45pm

Saturday 11th August – Cardiff City 3pm

As well as these matches, three others have been ‘announced’ in some way but Newcastle have so far declined to comment on them for whatever reason. All a bit mad when the first of these is this Friday.

Friday 13th July 6.30pm – Opposition that day is German lower league side Chemnitzer FC with a 6.30pm kick-off, tickets being sold by the German club following their announcement of the fixture over two weeks ago.

As well as that match, ESPN have included the following two friendlies in their schedules;

Monday 16th July – AS Monaco at the stadium of TSVLandsberg, ESPN list this fixture on their live TV schedules from 6pm to 8pm. Both Monaco and the German hosts have confirmed this fixture via their websites.

Saturday 21st July – Fenerbahce – Rumours have floated around that a fixture against the Turkish club would take place and bizarrely this match is listed by ESPN in their schedules, again 6pm to 8pm, but though the location is given as Vienna, no specific (neutral) ground has been mentioned.
