Newcastle United In Fight For £176m
To increase its attractiveness, the Europa League has been boosted by a subsidy of around £32m from UEFA/European clubs.
This boost has helped to increase the pot to be shared amongst the competing clubs by roughly 50% compared to the season just ended.
Around £118m was shared amongst the teams for the 2011/12 competition, with Atletico Madrid winning the trophy and pocketing over £8m.
Atletico just edged Schalke (financially) who benefited from the fact that German broadcasting deals attracted more money.
So if the unthinkable happened and we actually won a trophy, Newcastle as an English club would benefit disproportionately compared to teams from other countries.
Based on Atletico’s payout and the increased revenue overall, Newcastle would pull in a figure approaching £15m, though winning a trophy would of course be…priceless.

Naturally the £176m Europa League pot doesn’t even touch the sides in terms of what is on offer for the Champions League clubs this coming season.
They will be fighting it out for a share of at least £1bn in their European encounters, talk about the haves and the have nots.
