Newcastle Full-Back Going Nowhere

Davide Santon has given an insight into what his hopes and aspirations are…and where he sees these happening.

Alan Pardew clearly put a lot of work and thought into how they looked after Santon last season and the long-term gains could be massive for Newcastle.

In the past, anybody coming in on such a transfer fee would have been thrown straight in, no matter how unprepared they might have been to life in the Premier League. It is all down to opinion but I think a decent number of our previous foreign imports who are seen as massive flops, could have been a success if handled better.

Santon clearly has a lot of ability and his surging runs from full-back were thrilling to watch, though clearly he had some work to do on his defending.

Over the course of last season his improvement was there for all to see and as you’ll see below he appears fully committed to Newcastle United. The full interview can be seen at calciomercato (in Italian).

Do you think you can return to the national team in the future?

“I do think about it sometimes but we must go step by step, if I continue to do well here in the Premier League then I know I will have my chance. In 2014 there is the World Cup in Brazil and I would love to be there”.

Internazionale and Newcastle  both want Debuchy, does this bother you ?

“No, I am calm as at t the end of last season Alan Pardew warned me that his intention was to recruit a new full-back, be that  Debuchy or whoever.

If  he is a good player who can help the team then that’s all good and we’ll then see who the manager will pick”.

If you’re not sure, Roma are looking for a new full-back …

“I know, I know (Davide laughs), they made an approach a little while ago but Newcastle refused to let them speak with me which was fine by me. I’m settled in England and have no intention of  a move. I’ve only been here a year and it is too early to pack your bags and go back“.
