Debuchy – Last Man Standing

It might seem to have taken forever but the final stages of Mathieu Debuchy’s departure from Lille appears to be edging him out of the door.

The French club having signed what looks a ready made replacement in Djibril Sidibe from our old Intertoto opponents, Troyes.

Reports from France still have Newcastle as out and out favourites to sign the attacking full-back and when you delve into his time at Lille it might be no surprise, in some ways, to see why he looks to now be intent on leaving.

Having been at the club almost twenty years since the age of eight, the potential departure of Debuchy will be the final act in the dispersal of players who brought some great recent times to Lille.

Already departed in recent years are players such as Cabaye, Moussa Sow, Hazard, Mathieu Bodmer, Jean Makoun and Michel Bastos.

In advance of his scheduled return to training this week, Debuchy had this to say;

“What I want is to leave. I’m a little disappointed by how events have turned out. Training’s due to start again on Tuesday but I won’t be there.

I’m 100 percent decided. I want to leave Lille. The coach wants to keep me but I won’t change my mind”.

The threat to miss training looks to have been acted upon as there was widespread reports that the right-back had indeed given training a body swerve yesterday (Tuesday).

With seeing everybody leaving from the time of his integration into the team, maybe no surprise that Debuchy is pressing for his departure.

The drive to leave (and the lure of St.James’ Park hopefully!) must be especially strong as Lille are now moving into a brand new fifty thousand seater stadium after a protracted wait since 2003 with no permanent home. Plus of course the fact that they will shortly be playing for a chance of Champions League football in the coming season.
