Chemnitzer v Newcastle – Match Report and Video Highlights
Chemnitzer 1
Newcastle United 0
Newcastle’s first kickabout of the new campaign was a predictably low key affair, though like most of you I’d prefer not to see United lose any match.
The 1-0 defeat at German third division side Chemnitzer FC saw Alan Pardew field a more or less second string eleven and the fitness and match sharpness of the opposition showed.
While Newcastle were making their season debut it was the hosts’ seventh friendly and a goal by Anton Fink after ten minutes proved to be the only goal.
Newcastle’s young signings Gael Bigirimana and Romain Amalfitano made their first appearance in our colours, with the French midfielder playing the full 90 minutes with an industrious but unspectacular first sighting and our recent signing from Coventry making it onto the pitch for the last 20 minutes.
Chemnitzer looked the better team overall and only intermittently did Newcastle threaten, with a partnership of Sammy Ameobi and Haris Vuckic having a handful of efforts between them.
Rob Elliot was the busier keeper and made one particularly outstanding first half save.
Over the course of the second half, Alan Pardew made half a dozen changes with only Harper not getting the opportunity off the bench.
The score though remained at a single goal and both neutrals and the travelling fans will be hoping to see their first new season glimpses of the likes of Cisse and Coloccini when Newcastle play Monaco on Monday night, which is scheduled to be shown on ESPN.
