Are Newcastle United ‘Up For The Cups’?
Every club in the modern game needs to balance their priorities in terms of competing to win or stay in the Premier League (and everywhere in between) and seeing how far they can get in cup competitions.
Alan Pardew has been speaking to The Journal about his own balancing act in the coming season
The cups are our second priority, all the cups. The young players will get chances in those games. I know that the most important thing is that if we stand still then teams are going to pass us again.
We mustn’t stand still, so I’ve got improve the team. You can weaken a team trying to improve it, but you have to take that risk or we’re never going to break into the top four.
You can spoil the recipe that got us success last year, but we can’t stand still, we need to improve”.
You’ve got to admire our manager’s openness/honesty but for a lot of supporters, especially those of us who have been around the block a few times, the dream of actually winning something is all powerful.
The question often asked is ‘would you rather get in the Champions League or win a Cup’?
If you want to guarantee an instant massive cash injection into the club then it would be the Champions League but telling the grandkids that ‘I remember the day when the club made an extra £XXXX when they got in the Champions League’ won’t sound quite the same as telling the tale of ‘How we brought the Cup back from Wembley’.
Of course it would be nice to think we could have a squad capable of doing both and buying another two or three first team players would help give Alan Pardew much needed options of mixing it up from game to game, especially playing Europa League matches followed by Premier League three days later, or only two days as it still stands for the Chelsea away match.
