The club is based in the town of Huercal Overa in Andalusia, Spain – we are right on the border of the regions of Almeria and Murcia with a short drive to the famous La Manga Sports facility. This though is where I now call home and I have found myself working with the Club in a Director of Marketing and Integration role…
I was born in sunny Hexham and have followed NUFC all my life, it’s in my blood plus I also have 3 appearances as a mascot in games we have not lost….. Boro Away in ‘89 with Liam O scoring for the Mags in a one all draw, Everton at home in the same year with a 2-0 victory, Mira and Liam O sending the Toffeemen back to Liverpool in tears… the last a home game to Oldham the following season, winning 2-0 and the Mighty Mickey Quinn getting them both.
How did I end up in Spain??? Well it’s always down to a woman or beer and in my case it was the woman, not a Spaniard but a Welsh lass living out here. I met her through my boss when I was living in Barcelona and we hit it off more or less immediately, two years later and we were married in Gibraltar.
Back to Huercal Overa CF though, the club reformed in 2008 after financial problems that led to dropping to the lowest league possible (Glasgow Rangers Newco style). In the past few seasons though we have gained promotion each year and find ourselves in the Tercera Division (4th Tier of the Spanish set up), looking for promotion once again that would in turn make us a Professional outfit.
If you’re wondering on the quality of the league, think Blue Square/Blue Square North standard, on average we get between 600 to 800 for our home games and with a bit of magic from myself we now have introduced an EXPAT Supporters Club with close to 100 members and season tickets are getting snapped up fast, so we are hoping to fill the place out every game (1500 Capacity). We are looking to take roughly 50 to 100 away with us on the road which will be all over the region of Murcia to support the ‘Huercalenses’, unfortunately I have been unable to change the kit to black and white or have ‘Local Hero’ blasted out when the lads run out but all in good time…….
If you are ever over in the area and would like to see some good quality football with like minded football fans then drop me a line and I will let you know what is going on, or have a look at our English Language Website at http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/huercaloveracf
Howay the lads…Vamos Huercalenses!
