A Week To Do Carroll Deal
Liverpool depart for their tour of Canada/USA today but despite misleading reports elsewhere speculating as to whether or not Carroll would be on that plane, the truth is that he was never going to catch that particular one.
Along with the scousers’ other five England representatives at the Euros, the ponytailed one had already been given an extra week off, which leaves seven days for the two clubs to thrash out a deal.
Two of the three vital elements certainly appear to be there; new manager Brendan Rodgers seemingly making it clear that Carroll won’t suit his Swansea style short passing game, while Newcastle’s opening bid of a season long loan with a view to permanent transfer confirming the speculation that United’s interest was a reality.
The major challenge now would appear to be what price Liverpool’s owners will put on selling a player back to the club that mugged them for £35m and what amount of money would see them saving some face.
The figures bandies about suggest that Newcastle were looking to have a £12m price tag included in any eventual permanent deal, while reports out of Liverpool are claiming something around £17m would see the American owners ready to cut their losses.
Carroll’s real market value is probably somewhere in between those two amounts and Mike Ashley’s willingness to always pay the whole fee up front could help to make the deal happen.
As to the player himself, I don’t think he is going to attract a club with a better profile than Newcastle have at the minute and so long as Carroll’s wages can be accommodated then this very bizarrely looks like a deal that could well happen.
