Sir Bobby, Gazza and A Bar Of Soap in A Chicken Field

As he made his way up the slippery broadcasting ladder, Ian Dennis was Sports Editor at Radio Newcastle from 1996-98.

Nowadays Ian is Senior Football Reporter with Radio Five Live and a voice familiar with many of you.

A friend of The Mag, Ian kindly gave us an exclusive interview for the summer special of the magazine which came out last weekend and here is a snapshot of the extended interview. Single copies of the summer special and mag subscriptions all available now in our online shop.

Do you think Newcastle will be able to hang onto their best players this summer?

It would have been easier had they squeezed into a Champions League spot. At the time of writing I could see Ba and possibly Tiote leave. Ba’s release clause has been well publicised but should a massive offer come in for Tiote then I don’t think the club could turn that down. I would expect Krul, Cabaye, Cisse to stay and I understand Alan Pardew is keen to add further quality to enhance the playing squad for next season. Newcastle will need a healthy sized squad for next season because of the demands of the Europa League .

Which matches stick in the mind that you have covered over the years?

The one that always jumps out at me was Newcastle United v Barcelona. Keith Gillespie gave the full back a torrid time and Tino Asprilla was sensational. The atmosphere was awesome and that was some Champions League debut! The 5 nil victory over Manchester United and that ‘chip’ from Phillippe Albert.  I’m sure David Batty scored a long range goal against Wimbledon only days after David Beckham’s unbelievable strike from the halfway line but that often gets overlooked. Last season I also commentated on the remarkable 4-4 draw with Arsenal and just about kept the voice in check with Tiote’s wonder goal!

Did you come across Sir Bobby Robson much and if so, any good stories?

I didn’t come across him much but whenever I did he treated you with respect. I have heard so much about him through Chris Waddle who often keeps us entertained with tales of Italia 90. Let’s put it this way…if you ever get the chance to see Chris in a Q and A session, ask him about the bar of soap thrown into a chicken field with Gazza and Sir Bobby watching on!!
