Newcastle United’s Diamond Jubilee

You might have read somewhere that there is a Diamond Jubilee celebration happening around these parts, maybe though we should be putting the black and white bunting up as well/instead.

Not only have the royalists something to shout about but it is also sixty years since a George Robledo goal sunk Arsenal in the FA Cup final, which at the time made it a record five wins for the Toon.

If our present day team could re-enact that occasion then I think most of us would quite happily build a throne for Mike Ashley, or whoever else wanted one for that matter.

Elsewhere in the world the first ever singles chart was produced by the NME magazine. A sobering thought that in that time that has passed, the singles chart was such an important cultural part of most of our youths and is now all but obsolete.

Back in 1952 the average house price was £1,891 (rather than a few months mortgage payments!) and the average yearly wage was £589.59, not so good news.

The best news of course (apart from Newcastle beating Arsenal) was that you could get a pint for  1s 2d – the equivalent of 6p in today’s money.
