Newcastle United Or Join Rest Of World ‘Supporting’ Man Utd?
Well an amusing story coming out of Old Trafford is that Manchester United are claiming a worldwide fanbase of 659 million!
They claim that of the 659 million, 173 million were from the Middle East and Africa, 325 million from the Asia/Pacific and 108 million in China.
As for the UK they are claiming only 1% of the overall total, figures for Manchester were not revealed….
Obviously the claims are dubious to say the least and rely on asking random people in random countries very leading questions, if you asked the fifty thousand in St.James’ Park whether they ‘liked’ Barcelona you would no doubt get an overwhelmingly positive response.
What these type of figures/’research’ do is to help support the ever increasing commercial money flowing into Manchester United to pay the interest payments created by the Glazers.
Am I jealous that one in ten people on the planet are supposedly Man.Utd fans?
Numerous visits to Old Trafford and even more numerous conversations/debates/arguments with ‘United’ fans around the country (who always pulled out the ‘can’t get tickets’ excuse, which is very redundant now) leave me reeling in horror that a similar monster could be created around Newcastle United.
That isn’t to say you have to be insular, I love the people I’ve met from home and abroad who have been seduced by our football team and city because there is something a bit different about us. That’s a world of difference to waking up one morning and looking to see who is top of the league and planting their colours on top of your TV.
Hand on heart I’d rather follow our club with all of its faults and gut wrenching ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
