Newcastle Pre-Season Plans Hit By Cancellation

While Newcastle United yesterday confirmed pre-season matches in Portugal against Porto and Olympiakos, anybody’s hopes of having a jaunt to South Africa look to have been dashed.

Reports from South Africa say that the tournament has been cancelled with only two of the intended four teams having committed to the tournament and signed on the dotted line.

Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates had signed up but allegedly SuperSport United (bit frightening…not a million miles away from SportsDirect United!) and Newcastle United hadn’t reached agreement.

The organisers ‘SAIL’ confirmed the cancellation and apparently there had been unease as to the cost of hosting the event which was due to ┬ábe subsidised by public money.

As reported in South Africa’s The Mercury.

Feel sorry for anybody who was fancying a trip out there but on balance I like the idea of preparations for the new season taking place as close to home as possible with a minimum of travelling.
