Did Alan Pardew Deserve ‘Manager Of The Year’?
Having a look back over the past season, can you guess how many times Alan Pardew won ‘Manager Of The Month’?
I’ll give you a clue, it was one less than the mackems’ Martin O’Neill!
Yes, undisputed top manager last season yet Alan Pardew didn’t win a single monthly prize, I can’t claim credit as I got the tip off from Mag reader Bill of Jesmond and had to check out the League Managers (LMA) website to see if this bizarre statistic was true.
(***Just for fun see if you can name the other monthly winners, there are seven as well as O’Neill, including one who won it in two separate months – see if you can get them before you look at the full list at the bottom of this article. If you get them all then you are either a genius or very sad!)
I think the fact that Pardew didn’t win any monthly award proves what a brilliant job he did right through the season. Rather than one or two spectacular months he earned the award by keeping the players at it week after week, with only the odd blip.
The fact Newcastle were top seven all the way through from the very first ‘proper’ league table proves the consistency right through the thirty eight matches, including having to deal with crucial players away at the African Cup Of Nations and a smaller than ideal squad.
***The monthly winners were August – Ferguson (Man.U), September – ‘Arry (Spurs), October – Mancini (Man.City), November – ‘Arry (Spurs), December – O’Neill (Mackems), January – Rogers (Swansea), February – Wenger (Arsenal), March – Coyle (Bolton), April – Martinez (Wigan)
