If you don’t believe me then just read his own words (kindly translated, as always, by Pierre), another reason why no doubt he attracts such interest is because he is so watchable off the pitch and I’m not just talking about him with his shirt off as water artistically is poured over his torso (see video!).
Watch this video interview and you’ll get a decent insight into just big the obsession is with Hatem Ben Arfa back in France, not just in Newcastle.
Hatem is asked whether this current period is a happy one:
I have grown up in my head so it has affected all aspects of my life. Lately, well you could say really that in the last 2 to 3 years I have evolved a lot. You evolve when you realise that the situation you were in previously was not working, you get smacked so you start asking questions and then you start to realise that it is not always the fault of others.
It is true to say that nowadays sometime I say I can’t be bothered but then very quickly retract as I realise that I have some responsibility. In the long run by questioning each situation you manage to tame yourself and you become less impatient, less impulsive less driven by your own desires”.
Ben Arfa was speaking during an interview with Inrocks magazine and the video from his own official website (www.hatem-benarfa.com – unfortunately still available only in French) is entitled ‘The Making of the Interview at Inrocks’.
‘Hatem like you’ve never seen before. Captured, stunned and … shirtless! After a hesitant start, he finally engages with the expertise of the photographer. For the latter, the game will never be won until this unusual action lasting a minute and a half when a very calm Hatem takes on the water and the grass … A must show to football academies and …fashion … !’
