What Papiss Cisse Actually Said, Not The Press Lies

The media has been flooded with stories regarding Papiss Cisse today, most of them not allowing the truth to get in the way of a good story.

After the win at Chelsea, Papiss Cisse had given an interview to French publication L’Equipe and most of the rubbish/lies were ‘inspired’ by the following section of the interview (Thanks as always to ‘Pierre’, our invaluable translator).

His ambitions

My long-term goal, is to play in one of the very top clubs, to win the African Cup of Nations, and why not also one day to win the Champions League. Since I was little, I like Real Madrid, but today I am happy at Newcastle. Even if it’s not Manchester United or Manchester City, it is/remains a big club.¬†

The part where Cisse says that as a kid he liked Real Madrid, has then been used to make dozens of ‘Cisse says come and get me to Real Madrid’ type headlines.

While his reference to the Manchester clubs is clearly with regard to the fact they are the two top clubs this season as they are fighting out the title, yet I have even seen this used to make up a headline of ‘Cisse harbours Manchester United ambitions’!

Credit to both Cisse and Newcastle United for taking such prompt action last night to make clear that the stories were rubbish and that legal action was being looked into. Hopefully press lies like these will simply make the squad even tighter knit.

There was some really good (truthful!!!!) stuff in the interview and we’ve included a couple more translated bits below.

A New Newcastle “FC Ciss√©”?

In Fribourg, the fans had nicknamed the club that way (laughs). It was something funny. Players were teasing me and told me they were going to build a monument or give my name to the stadium. In Newcastle, even though I have been more successful than during my first six months in Germany, I’m not there yet.

The presence of Demba Ba

During the African Cup of Nations, he told me a lot about the club, the way people live football in England. He opened my eyes even before I put my luggage down. Is he mad at me for having stolen the show? No no, not at all. This is a great striker. He has already scored 16 goals, it is not nothing. If the team is here today is thanks to him. At the moment he is going through a bad patch, but he will find the net again. I’m doubly sure.

Great to see Cisse not taking himself seriously about the naming of the club after him, as I have read elsewhere the Freiberg fans generally rate him as their greatest player EVER.

While his backing for Demba Ba is clearly to me not somebody just going through the motions and saying the right thing.

A class striker but just as class off the pitch.
