What Newcastle’s Players Earn Compared To Rest Of World
The numbers in the table are the average earnings of sporting clubs first team players and were compiled by Nick Harris, editor of the excellent sportingintelligence.com
The first thing you would notice is how prominently football clubs are featured in the top earners, plus of course you could have guessed which football clubs are the best paid.
However, the real madness of football and English football in particular is maybe best told by some Premier League clubs who are further down the list.
It is little wonder Villa’s Randy Lerner is reining in spending when you see the legacy of the financial damage Martin O’Neill has helped inflict on the Midlands club. A team fighting relegation yet paid nearly fifty thousand a week.
Then you have the crazy figures for the likes of Bolton and Fulham, where if you take away TV money they generate a pittance from elsewhere.
It will also be interesting to see what Liverpool’s American owners will do this summer as paying mid-table quality players Champions League level wages would not have been on their agenda.
The wage bill West Ham have continued with in the Championship is a real high risk strategy.
While of course this is one league table we will be happy to see the mackems bragging about, Steve Bruce has a lot to answer for with their average but highly paid ‘stars’!
As for Newcastle United, if the team can continue to prosper then income will increase and that will allow the wage bill to expand at a sensible level to allow us to compete.
It will be a tough challenge but one that has to be met.
