Newcastle fans knew that Hatem Ben Arfa had a reputation for doing the unexpected and our first experience of that in the flesh was on a visit to Goodison.
I remember watching the match, a typically competitive Premier League encounter with a lot of effort but not much composure.
The then on-loan player picked the ball up some thirty yards from goal in a central position, feinted to go right but instead went left – then hit a thunderbolt form some twenty five yards across the keeper and into the top corner.
Hatem Ben Arfa had arrived.
