Everton v Newcastle – Do The Statistics Tell Another Story?
What came out of of the Everton match according to BBC Statistics were the following statistics on what proved to be a disappointing final day of what has been a great season.
Possession NUFC 53% Everton 47%
Total Shots NUFC 11 Everton 17
Shots On Target NUFC 5 Everton 11
Corners NUFC 3 Everton 4
Goals NUFC 1 Everton 3
In Europe NUFC 1 Everton 0
There were parallels with the Wigan away match as Newcastle actually played a lot better in the second half, though just as in that previous four goal defeat, it was all too little too late as the match was already over.
Once you go behind in a match it appears that it becomes so much harder to hit the back of the net as when chances come, your players maybe feel the pressure/expectation more and of course it tends to give extra resilience to the opposition when they have a lead to defend.
I was quite amazed to see that Newcastle edged possession but in every other department they were a clear second best.
Maybe the day was best summed up by the fact that it took an Everton player to give us that consolation goal.
