Wigan v Newcastle – Any Clues In The Statistics?
What came out of of the Wigan match according to BBC Statistics is the following;
Possession NUFC 48% Wigan 52%
Shots On Target NUFC 3 Wigan 8
Corners NUFC 1 Wigan 4
Goals NUFC 0 Wigan 4
We had more shots!
I think actually by the end Newcastle might even have had as many chances as the home team but that is all a bit immaterial when your first opportunity doesn’t appear until you are four down!
There was nothing much in it with regard to possession but it was poor defending by Newcastle to a large extent, combined with some great strikes by Wigan – on a day when accuracy deserted our forwards, the shots on target stats backing this up.
Particularly Papiss Cisse who couldn’t do anything wrong until today, though he could still have got a hat-trick, missing an easy header and going close with a couple of great efforts….and this was a quiet day for him!
Goals change games and Williamson’s feeble challenge for the first goal set the tone, we had momentum going into this match but that first strike gave Wigan all the momentum they needed on the day.
