Something Better Than The Champions League For Newcastle United

I was gutted to see Chelsea knock Barca out last night, for the odd one or hundred reasons, mainly though because they are now in a position to go on and fluke the whole bloody Champions League!

If Barcelona had got a joiner in to shave off a centimetre of wood/plastic off the woodwork/plasticwork(???) before last night’s match, we’d have at least one unwanted distraction crossed off our list.

So if the Russian cockneys beat Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, only third place or higher would be good enough for Champions League qualification.

Am I bothered? Well yes I am actually but also in a way it just reminds me what the only important thing is and I’m sure Alan Pardew is drilling the exact same thing into the players today.

The only real reason why Newcastle United are in the mix for Champions League qualification is because the players have put the point son the board.

It might seem like an obvious thing to say but you can get lost in all the permutations and what if this and that happens etc.

Will Arsenal not fancy it at Stoke? Will Spurs continue their shocking run of form against lowly Blackburn? Will Abramovich tell everybody to put their feet up until 19th May?

We’d had a great season up until (and including) that last gasp defeat at Arsenal but this current run of wins has just blown us all away.

Who qualifies for whatever would have seen us just as usual with our grubby faces pushed against the window looking in from the outside at what the ‘big’ clubs were doing. This season hasn’t been a fluke, in the top six all season and we have got some very very good players.

The most exciting thing for me is not whether we qualify or not for the Champions League, it is the enticing possibility that we have a manager, top notch scout and a group of quality players that could re-establish Newcastle United back in the top six every season.

How exciting would that be after so many mismanaged years in the wilderness?
