Newcastle United have been very good defensively this season, give or take the odd five goals against Fulham and Spurs!
Particularly early in the season when Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini teamed up with such good effect in the middle.
In fact Tim Krul now has 12 clean sheets but did you realise we’d never kept two clean sheets in a row…..until now!
Yes, the shut-outs against Liverpool and Swansea were the first time we’d kept back to back ones this season. The first two Premier League matches of the season against Arsenal and the mackems had seen clean sheets but in between we conceded at Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup.
They are still what they are (squad players) but much credit has to go to Williamson and Perch, I bet you would have got pretty good odds from the bookies on not conceding any goals from two tough looking fixtures.
Plus as an extra bonus for those in front of him, in actual fact Tim Krul had very few real saves to make over the three hours of football against the scousers and the Welshmen.
Even if our captain proves fit to play today, I fancy that Alan Pardew might not take any chances with five more crucial matches to go and a further twelve days recuperation after the Bolton match.
So I can see Colo on the bench and the Perch/Williamson combo going for a record breaking third consecutive clean sheet.#
This will be one mad season to tell the grandchildren about but I fancy we have a few more bizarre twists and turns to play out in the remaining matches, starting today.
Perch and Williamson, possible defensive kingpins, who’d have thought it?
