Newcastle United To Pick Up Silverware?

The FA is celebrating the past twenty years of English football (…well since SKY invented it!) and have just released their nominations for the various categories.

Are the deluded fans of small club Newcastle United represented at all….?

The FA ‘s Premier League 20 years awards have thrown up the following –

Best Player

The heavyweights naturally line up here for what is probably the premium award and while Big Al is on the list, he is unfortunately up against the likes of Bergkamp and Cantona who were also great players but had the slight(!) advantage of also playing in great teams.

Guessing the sheet metal worker’s son will have to settle for…

Best Forward

Alan Shearer is not surprisingly featured and surely this is just a case of putting your goals on the table!

Best Goal

Probably the hardest category to judge as it comes down to personal choice and whether you prefer shots from the halfway line or mazy Ben Arfish (sorry he doesn’t feature but who cares at the minute!) mazy runs. Alan Shearer lines up again here with his volley against Everton, while Dabizas also is involved in the role of most confused defender as Bergkamp brilliantly turns him.

Best Match

With well over seven thousand matches to choose from, surely the deluded Geordies will be luck y to see their team featured in the choice of ten matches that have been plucked out?

Well amazingly we claim three nominations; a win, a loss and a draw. Just for a bit of fun and to test your brain this morning (depending on where you are in the world!), see if you can guess the three Newcastle games to figure – answer s at the bottom of this article. I’m afraid we all know which one will win this one….

Most Memorable Quote

I’d really love it if we won this one…or maybe I wouldn’t. King Kev’s both barrels at Ferguson is up for the award but pretty tough competition from what are no doubt considered the more cerebal foreigners talking the same rubbish but with a foreign air, step forward Mourinho, Cantona….

Best Save

Nice to see Shay get a mention here for his flying save against the mackems (they are currently preparing the open top bus in mackemland in honour of this!) in the 2001/02 season, like all great keepers he made a lot of it look easy with his positioning. You have to fancy though that Schmeichel will carry this off and to an extent I would say this category should probably be entitled ‘top keeper’ as votes are likely to be cast with that subconsciously in mind.

Best Goal Celebration

I think there are a few of my toon goal celebrations that could feature here….but unfortunately they have restricted it to players. Temuri Ketsbaia kicking the living daylights out of the advertising hoarding may take the honours for humour, while Shearer is up again on the basis of ‘multiple occasions’.

Also figuring is the athletic LuaLua – I think I could manage Shearer’s or Ketsbaia’s but would find copying LuaLua’s slightly challenging.

Shame European games aren’t included as I just loved it when Tino Asprilla hung his shirt on the corner flag and held it aloft – priceless.

Fantasy Team

This is made up of eleven individual players so fingers crossed for Alan Shearer in this one as well.

Also up for grabs is Best Manager, Best Season and Best Team (One Club).

Keep your eyes open for chances to vote and we’ll do our best to keep you posted.

***Best Match – The three nominations were the 3-4 against Liverpool, 5-0 v Manchester United and the incredible 4-4 with Arsenal.

Which black & white heroes/moments do YOU think they have missed out in the nominations?
