Newcastle Almost Bring European Football to Sunderland…But Not Quite!

With Olympic football coming to St.James’ Park this summer, it raised the possibility of potential problems if Newcastle were involved in the 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League.

If United finish sixth then they would come in at that stage and be due to play on the 2nd August, during the Olympic football matches taking place. With advertising/branding being totally different for the Olympics (even the ‘official’ name of St.James’ Park reverting back to….St.James’ Park) it had raised speculation that Newcastle may even have had to instead play at the Stadium Of Light – no not the proper one in Portugal, the one down the road on waerside.

Happily UEFA have made clear that in the event of such a clash they would look to allow Newcastle to play their first leg away from home and so the home leg would be after the Olympics had been and gone.

So ‘unfortunately’, sunderland will be celebrating at least forty years without European football since their famous continental exploits back in 1973 when  they successfully beat European giants Vasas in the Cup Winners Cup before Sporting Lisbon knocked them out.
