Is Dutch International a Done Deal For Newcastle United?

Alan Pardew, with the help of Chief Scout Graham Carr, has completed the majority of his signings in near mystery.

Unlike the way in which some of our past managers would discuss possible transfer dealings openly (Allardyce for example).

For me this is refreshing and shows that we are doing our homework and not spending a single penny without looking at many different options.

We exploited contract loopholes to sign the likes of Cabaye, Marveaux and Demba Ba, then most recently have brought Pappis Cisse to the club for what looks to be a real bargain, when it looked most likely we would sign the Mali international Modiba Maiga.

Having brought in two quality forwards in Ba and Cisse, our most immediate need to recriut new additions will be in defence.

So with recent signings being done in secrecy, is a player we have been linked with consistently, out of the question for Newcastle?

Erik Pieters – a name we have been linked with on a weekly basis for the past three transfer windows – seemingly fitting in with our excellent transfer strategy.

At twenty three years old and an established member of the Dutch squad, Pieters can play in the centre of defence or at left back. This is nothing new for anyone with at least a passing interest in our potential targets.

The non-Twitter users (myself included) may not have seen that Pieters is a close friend of our ‘Keeper Tim Krul and appears to watch us play on a regular basis.

Pieters has just over two years left on his current contract and is valued anywhere between 4 and 6 Million Euros. He also shares an agent with former Toon player Jon Dahl Tomasson.

But will we sign a player we have heard so much about? Personally I think Pieters will be signed only if the club and Danny Simpson cannot agree terms on an extension to his current contract.

However, if the price is right and European qualification is achieved, then it is increasingly more likely.
