Help NUFC Star To Help Sir Bobby Robson Foundation
Newcastle United centre half Steven Taylor and ex-Magpies’ star John Beresford are backing Robbie Elliott’s ambitious Bike For Bobby.
And the defensive duo is urging the public to back the 3,500-mile cycling marathon by using a new text number to make donations.
Bike For Bobby is the first major event undertaken by charity The Robbie Elliott Foundation.
And Elliott aims to raise thousands of pounds for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
“I have known Robbie for a long time now and what he’s doing for two great charities is no surprise,” said Taylor.
“He has always kept himself in shape and loves a challenge and that’s exactly what Bike For Bobby will be.
“We both enjoyed our time playing under Sir Bobby and the fact that money raised from this event will benefit the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation makes it extra special.
“I want to wish Robbie all the best and I know the Newcastle public will be right behind him.
“With the new text number it couldn’t be easier to back him.”
Supporters can text 70070 to TREF03 via the new service set up to feed funds directly into The Robbie Elliott Foundation.
And Beresford, who was on hand to see Elliott launch his charity earlier this year, added: “I hope the people of the North East will get right behind Robbie.
“I did the Coast to Coast route for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and that was three days doing 60 miles a day. I enjoyed it but it was incredibly tough.
“With that in mind I did ask Robbie if he knew what he was taking on! He’s planning to do double that distance most days for at least three weeks.
“But he’s got the mentality and he’s always been an exceptionally fit lad. I think it’s brilliant and of course he’s raining money through his foundation for two terrific causes.
“Using the text number is the easiest way to donate and I’d urge people to pick up their mobile phones now!”
Bike For Bobby will see Elliott and friend Phil Gray, a triathlete, cycle non-stop from Lisbon to Newcastle via Porto, Barcelona, Eindhoven, Fulham, Wembley and Ipswich.
The event will take place towards the end of October and other celebrity backers include Ashington’s Ashes cricket hero Steve Harmison and Manchester United’s Geordie midfielder Michael Carrick.
